about

I had just gotten back from Ireland where I attended a friend's wedding and was filled with the music of the streets of Dublin. It became apparent to me while I was there that the street musicians were about the most exciting players I had encountered live in a long time. Part of what excited me was their unabashed energy and enthusiasm for songs I am sure they played day after day, night after night.
The other part was their guitar playing. Loud, fierce strumming like they truly had something to say and not a lot of time to do it in. My first week back I happened into the garage sale at the Old Town School of Folk in Chicago which for people in the know is a great place to pick up cheap gear. I went not knowing exactly what I wanted but as soon as I made my way through the swarms of people packing into the tiny basement I found what I was there for.
It was a dusty old Teac quarter inch reel to reel tape recorder that was missing the front cover but was in otherwise decent shape. The tag read on the top '$30 it works." That was enough for me so with the last money I had left in my pocket I picked up the machine and headed off into the sunny summer streets of Chicago.
The machine however, was much heavier than I had given it credit for and I had no money for a cab and was thus forced to drag the awkward tape player onto the L train. I guess this is what a friend of mine meant when he told me you have to struggle for your art!
After ordering some new reels of tape I began to try out different recording techniques and also incorporate the street muscian style into my songs. One day I fell into a bit of a groove and before I knew it I had recorded an album's worth of songs live in front of a single microphone. Although it took awhile for me to release it officially this is a culmination of those different experiences I had during one summer in Chicago.

about

Old Man Winther

Assembly line pop producer and creative archivist. A song is nothing but a germ; a small, fairly insignificant particle. Output must be viewed by the proliferation of particles or germs. Backwards is more important than forwards. Do not worry about self-promotion unless that excites you but it probably won't and you are most likely not going to be a success anyway. ... more
